Pei-Hsuan Wang

$880.00

'Vessel in the Form of a Snake II' is part of Wang's 'Family Portrait' series, where the 12 zodiacs are reimagined as offering vessels. Drawing from the sancai ceramics of the Tang Dynasty—once reserved for funerary objects and burdened with taboo, later repurposed as symbols of cultural triumph, and capitalized to display oriental authenticity—Wang reinterprets this technique with contemporary materials. Questioning essentialist narratives surrounding identity, the series reflects on cycles of renewal and the complexities of cultural legacy.

ABOUT PEI-HSUAN WANG

Pei-Hsuan Wang's practice is a continuous exploration of kinship, shaped by migration, memory, and the interplay between personal and canonized histories. Her work weaves together family and bio(mytho)graphical narratives, folklore, and cultural artifacts shaped by geopolitical realities. Through sculpture, installation, drawing, and public intervention, Wang navigates states of migratory restlessness, incorporating diverse materials and traditions, from sancai (tri-color) ceramics and institutionally loaned objects to motorized mechanics. Recent solo projects include: 'Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story' at Biennale Kortrijk, Kortrijk (2024), 'Gratitude Is A Colored Vessel' at Ballon Rouge, Brussels (2023), 'Ghost Eat Mud' at Kunsthal Gent, Ghent (2022), 'I've Left My Body to Occupy Others' at Good Weather, Chicago (2020).
